Course Objectives: | The image and text, or perhaps vision and concept, are among the earliest cultural practices of human beings. What we show/see and write/read not only changes from culture to culture, but they are located elsewhere, in the exact practice of making. This class will focus on how the actual production of images and texts may be seen as integral elements of cultures by focusing on their theoretical, historical, national, and media-based aspects. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; I. To introduce students to a simultaneous understanding of image and text. II. To review the art historical treatment of the separation between image and text. III. To underline how looking and seeing differ. IV. To explore aspects of visuality in different realms such as body, senses and sexualities. V. To explore the relation between images, texts and religions. VI. To discuss how difference is produced in visual and textual representation. |
