It adopts the widely acknowledged view that knowledge of the history of higher education is important for successfully providing leadership and performing other professional responsibilities. History provides important perspectives for routinely resolving critical leadership issues and problems. This is the case because institutions and institutional systems over time develop customs, values and traditions that continually affect students, faculty, administrators and other stakeholders. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; • will be able to acquire knowledge about important historical trends, customs, values and traditions of Turkish higher education; • will be able to develop capacity to conduct historical analysis of important aspects of higher education; • will be able to apply insights gained from history to the tasks of leadership of institutions and institutional systems; • will be able to develop appreciation for and interest in the field of history of higher education |
The course will survey and assess the evolution of Turkish higher education from the founding of the first higher education institution to present patterns of virtual and distance learning. Historical and institutional contexts for this development include consideration of the role of religion, government and the private sector in shaping the demand and provision of elite and accessible forms of higher education opportunity. |
