Course Objectives: The course will provide an analysis and explanation of the whole range of Ottoman social relations. Human relations are explained in terms of marriage, family, kinship, sexual culture, nourishment and cuisine cultures. In addition to this, the course will focus on the process in which state and society experienced events such as social mobility and banditry, and study the management of income, monetary politics and pre-industrial activities of the empire in the context of its economic principles and mentality. The object of this course is to make students familiar with the main concepts of the Ottoman social and economic history of the classical period.

Learning Outputs

The students who have succeeded in this course;
• Show knowledge of Ottoman social and economic history of the classical period
• Interpret the events in broader world and Middle Eastern context
• Develop critical approach to the traditional nationalistic historiography concerning the period
• Acquire skills in historical analysis, textual interpretation, and critical discussion

Course Content

The historiographical challenges of the study of the Ottoman Empire; how did the Ottomans deal with their neighbors, friends, allies and enemies duringclassical age. Ottoman art and architecture.
