Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to address the understanding of creativity and spirituality embedded in Turk & Islamic Art. The students will be exposed to the various types of arts including architectural monuments and outstanding examples of decorative arts in all the various media-pottery, metal work, textile, carpet weaving, glass and jewelery.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
•to describe the main features of Turkish art
•to evaluate the concept of “Islamic art” through its development
•to define the basic concepts and terms of the Turkish-Islamic architecture and craftwork
•to analyze the salient characteristics of the classic period Ottoman art and architecture
•to discover Mimar Sinan’s life and the social, political and economical structure in the years he served
•to compare Mimar Sinan’s works to the works from different periods
•to classify the Ottoman artworks into different periods according to the architectural traditions
•to discover the types of the traditional Turkish-Islamic craftwork

Course Content

Students will describe historical development and features of Turkish and Islamic art, recognize art works in Turkish and Islamic art especially architectural Works and minor arts.
