Course Objectives: The first level:
Students present their areas of interest to the comprehensive examination committee and get the approval of the committee about the topics that they will cover in their comprehensive examination. As the first phase of the examination, students prepare a bibliography of 10 sources focused on the theoretical and methodological issues largely covered in compulsory courses of the program. The committee prepares a set of related questions arising out of the bibliography. The student then has a week to answer one of these questions in essay form. The paper should not exceed 3500 words, including the notes and bibliography.

The Second Level:
Once the student passes this phase, s/he is ready to take the second part of the exam for which s/he has to prepare another bibliography of 40 sources specifically focused on her/his research area. Based on the bibliography, the student will prepare a critical and comprehensive literature review and submit to the committee. The committee for the second phase of the comprehensive has to include two external readers and two internal readers, other than the advisor of the student. The student writes a paper of literature review, which cannot exceed 7000 words, including the notes and bibliography in a month. The student finally orally defends the comprehensive examination before the committee within two weeks of the date of submission of the paper. Upon completion of the examination, the student proceeds to the Dissertation Proposal.
