Course Objectives: | This course delves into the basic approaches to Film and Politics; Film, Activism and Opposition; Propaganda in Film, Ideology and the State; The Politics of Mobility; Political Hollywood; Alternative and Independent Film and Politics; The Politics of Cine-geographies and The Politics of Documentary - covering a broad range of topics, including: warfare, history, Cold-war, third cinema, cinema after 9/11, activism, human rights, political and social movements, film as a response to political crises, propaganda, the impact of neoliberalism on cinema, and many others. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; 1. Examine the basic approaches to Film and Politics. 1. To understand and analyze the relationship between politics and cinema. 2. To examine the impact of political events on cinema. 3. To evaluate the reflections of political ideologies on cinema. 4. To analyze the representations of political leaders in cinema. 5. To recognize political propaganda techniques in cinema and evaluate them from a critical perspective. 6. To examine the social and cultural effects of political films. 7. To understand how political messages are transmitted and perceived through cinema. 8. To evaluate the impact of political films on history and social awareness. 9. To examine the impact of political films on concepts such as democracy, human rights and freedom. 10. Political films contribute to critical thinking and social awareness development skills. |
It foregrounds the key debates, concepts, approaches and case studies that critique and explain the complex relationship between politics and cinema, discussing films from around the world and including examples from film history as well as contemporary cinema. It also explores the wider relationship between politics and entertainment, examines cinema’s response to political and social transformations and questions the extent to which filmmaking, itself, is a political act. Teaching methods of the course are Lecture, Reading, Discussion and Observation. |
