Course Objectives: The goal of this course is to survey the major theoretical trends that have influenced cultural studies and film studies and to approach critically to theoretical developments that created 20th century critical thought.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
In this course, the students will be able to approach media studies, cultural studies and film studies which are interdisciplinary areas and the theories which influenced these areas closely.

Course Content

The course will specifically focus on three major anti philosophers of 19th century, Marx, Nietzsche and Freud and their impressive influence on our time and also aims to form a critical basis for use towards current Turkish practices.

1) Beginning with an instant encounter: Culture of departure and arrival and terminal identities. Narratives, Stories, Representations. Introduction to Culture of 20th century from the experiences of immigration and diasporas Related readings
2) Introduction to Culture Studies and inheriting the major impact of Frankfurt School and social theory. Two wide and spread influence from Marxism to the major body of thoughts of 20th century including Cultural Studies: Ideology and hegemony: Gramsci and Althusser. British School in Cultural studies. An Introduction of American Context in Cultural Studies: From Jameson to Spivak; Aronowitz to Harawey and coexistence of high and low and popular to mass “Culture of Empire” vs. “Culture of Diaspora”; modern vs. postmodern and everything under the immense umbrella of postcolonial Studies. Narratives and representations of exilic, émigré and free floating subjects of all and nomads of postmodern subjections under the new international division of labor, and people on detour, phantom of the unreturnable and homeless of all cities. Dialogism, Bakhtin and Popular culture: Carnival, centrifugal and centripetal forces of of culture, and dialogical encounter.
