Course Objectives: This course aims to provide students with an insight into the field of social psychology. By examining various issues in the field, they are expected to develop an understanding of the basic social psychological processes underlying our thinking and everyday behavior. At the end of the semester, they should have an enhanced awareness as to how we perceive ourselves and the world around us, and why we behave the way we do in particular situations.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
I. Define social psychology and distinguish it from related fields that study human social behavior.
II. Define basic social psychological concepts such as schemas, attribution, and attitudes.
III. Describe the kinds of information that are important in forming impressions of other people.
IV. Explain how the self concept influences our perception of ourselves and the social environment.
V. Explain the relationship between attitudes and behavior.
VI. Explain various aspects of persuasion.
VII. Define and distinguish among stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination.
VIII.Describe how prejudice develops, how it might affect people, and how it can be reduced.
IX. Define and contrast the concepts of conformity, compliance, and obedience.
X. Describe different factors affecting conformity and obedience.
XI. Describe gender stereotypes and their likely effects on the individual and the society.
XII. Describe the role of the media in reflecting and creating gender stereotypes.
XIII. Explain various influences on interpersonal attraction.
XIV. Compare and contrast different types of love.
XV. Describe various influences on relationship formation, maintenance, and dissolution.
XVI. Describe various different ways being in a group influences individual behavior.
XVII. Explain factors that make group decision-making different than individual decision-making and explain safeguards groups can use to ensure effective decision-making.

Course Content

This course focuses on the major topics of research in the field of social psychology. Specifically, these topics include social cognition; social perception; the self; attitudes and attitude change; prejudice; social influence; gender; interpersonal attraction; personal relationships; behavior in groups

1) To learn and compare major sociology perspectives, both classical and contemporary, and apply all of them to analysis of social conditions. 2
2) To be able to identify the basic methodological approaches in building sociological and anthropological knowledge at local and global levels 5

7) To identify and to have a knowledge of the theories related to urban and rural sociology and demography; and political sociology, sociology of gender, sociology of body, visual sociology, sociology of work, sociology of religion, sociology of knowledge and sociology of crime. 3
8) To have knowledge of how sociology is positioned as a scientific discipline from a philosophical and historical perspective
9) To have the awareness of social issues in Turkish society, to develop critical perspective in analysing these issues and to have a knowledge of the works of Turkish sociologists and to be able to transfer this knowledge
10) To have the awareness of social issues and global societal processes and to apply sociological analysis to development and social responsibility projects
11) To have the ability to define a research question, design a research project and complete a written report for various fields of sociology, either as an individual or as a team member.
12) To be able to transfer the knowledge gained in the areas of sociology to the level of secondary school. 1
