Course Objectives: "Gender studies is an interdisciplinary field of study. Gender focuses on femininity and masculinity on an individual level, on the one hand, and make emphasis on gender on the other, focusing on the multidimensional relationships in which a person is involved in different forms and roles in the social sphere. It covers common areas from sociology to political science, anthropology, history, law, psychology, medical sciences and philosophy.
Students will be able to comprehend that these factors affect each other."

The students who have succeeded in this course are able to;
1) recognize the major thinkers who guide gender studies and can list their works. Question cultural norms and gender codes.
2) talk about the disciplines related to gender studies and associate them with examples.
3) express gender studies nationally and internationally in terms of category and chronology
4) understand and explain international conventions, reports and statistics related to gender.
5) discuss and apply feminine and masculine roles in the form of social relations.
6) define violence against women internationally and know institutional and legal regulations.
7) know that almost every society in the world has judgments shaped by its own special cultural, historical and social characteristics and conditions.Learn about the struggle to solve the inequality between men and women and list solutions. Gain a broad and global gender perspective.

Course Content

The concept of gender, its formation throughout the history of civilization. Relationship between social sciences, visual arts, literature and media with gender. Gender equality in international law.

In our course, the following teaching methods and techniques will be used: Case Study, Field Study, Collaborative Learning, Lecture, Reading, Discussion, Individual Study, Social Activity.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) What is gender? Major philosophers and their works that guide gender studies. Physical, intellectual, emotional and behavioral characters imposed by society.
2) Gender in the axis of state-society-individual relations. Concepts of; Power, political power, authority, patriarchal system, masculine domination.
3) Representation of gender codes in visual arts. Masculine and feminine identity in the historical process from the formation of civilization. (Mesepotamia, Egypt, Hittite, Roman, Renaissance)
4) The concept of gender in literature, the position of women and the way they are represented in literary works (Woolf, Beauvoir, Adıvar)
5) Women's movements in the world. Ottoman women's movement, Republican women's movement. First, second and third wave feminism.
6) Concepts of private sphere & public sphere. Distinction, discrimination, equality.
7) The relationship between media and gender. Gender roles in cinema films,in TV series and in commercials.
8) Movies highlighting gender roles. + MIDTERM
9) Definition of "discrimination" in international law. United Nations-CEDAW (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) 1979 and the European Union-Istanbul Convention 2011
10) Feminization in the public & private sector, in the Parliament, in universities etc. The concept of "Glass ceiling", stereotypes, statistics.
11) Women's movement in Turkey and their contribution to amend the Civil Code and Criminal Code. I
12) Women's movement in Turkey and their contribution to amend the Civil Code and Criminal Code. II
13) Case study of some major NGOs and platforms; Mor Çatı, Ka-Der, Uçan Süpürge, Kadının İnsan Hakları Yeni Çözümler, Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız.
14) Summary of the course topics, directions and notices for the final exam.
