Course Objectives: Through the course, the effects of different types of light (from natural to human-made) on image-making are explored.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1- Recognize basic aspects of light on the photographic image.
2- Develop an understanding of how to work with natural light.
3- Illustrate ability in working with studio lighting set-ups.
4- Identify the effects of existing light.
5- Develop ways to modify this light through reflecting, filtering, filling, diffusing, and cutting.
6- Gain basic knowledge to associate light and photographic basics with animation photography.

Course Content

It covers the practices and theories of the effects of different types of light (natural to human-made) on image-making.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Basic Photographing: - Visual ability of eye - Camera Obscura - Cameras - Filming Formatsand Respective Sensitivities - Objectives - Aperture and shutter - Exposure - Exposuremeters - Exposure methods and interventions - Depth of field, hyperfocal distance etc.
2) Medium format cameras: Large format cameras (camera motions, scheimpflug rule,capacity, exemplary shootings) and motions of 35 mm cameras.
3) Light, colour temperature, colour conversion filters, measurement of colour temperature,white proof in digital photographs, correction, contrast status, haze, density, polarized filtersand filter factors.
4) Photograph studio, studio systems and light systems.
5) Lighting and contrast.
6) Classwork with objects and models.
7) Shootings with continuous lights.
8) Combined utilization of various light sources.
9) Exemplar shootings related to high key photographs. Exemplar shootings related to low keyphotographs, white object shooting on white ground, black object shooting on black ground.
10) Chiaroscuro lighting - Rembrant lighting - Cameo lighting - Silhouette lighting Shootingspertaining to Notan lighting.
11) Presentation of midterm assignment.
12) Anahtar ışık -Dolgu ışık -Lateral -Ters ışık -Kafa üstü ışığı -Below-Bound -Arka plan -Yansıtma -Doğrudan Işık -Doğrusal olmayan Işık -Böyen -Geniş -Dar -Kelebek.
13) Architecture -Underwater -Aerial -Industrial -Nighttime -Shootings Requiring Large Plateaus:Automotive, Room -Location (Kitchen, Bathroom, Furnitures, etc) -Utilization of the AvailableAmbient Light and Use of Light Together.
14) Portrait and Portrait at location.
