Course Objectives: | This course aims to provide students with an insight into the field of social psychology. By examining various issues in the field, they are expected to develop an understanding of the basic social psychological processes underlying our thinking and everyday behavior. At the end of the semester, they should have an enhanced awareness as to how we perceive ourselves and the world around us, and why we behave the way we do in particular situations. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; 1. Describe gender stereotypes and their likely effects on the individual and the society. 2. Describe the role of the media in reflecting and creating gender stereotypes. 3. Explain various influences on interpersonal attraction. 4. Compare and contrast different types of love. 5. Describe various influences on relationship formation, maintenance, and dissolution. 6. Describe various different ways being in a group influences individual behavior. 7. Explain factors that make group decision-making different than individual decision-making and explain safeguards groups can use to ensure effective decision-making. 8. Explain how different theoretical perspectives explain helping behavior. 9. Describe how individual characteristics and environmental conditions influence helping. 10. Discuss various influences on aggressive behavior. 11. Define and distinguish among stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. 12. Describe how prejudice develops, how it might affect people, and how it can be reduced. |
This course follows up on the issues of PSY2005 Social Psychology I. It focuses on the major topics of research in social psychology. These topics include, gender; interpersonal attraction; personal relationships; behavior in groups; helping behavior; aggression; applied social psychology. |
