Course Objectives: The course focuses on therapist variables (personal and professional), the counselling relationship, and the counselling process as essential elements of effective counselling. Students are also expected to develop expertise in case conceptualisation and advanced counselling skills. Students will examine and apply techniques and strategies based on major counselling theories while exploring the role of cultural issues and the need for individual awareness in the application of these approaches.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
Within the scope of the course, students will acquire the following knowledge and skills:
1. Apply basic counselling skills with increasing consistency and effectiveness.
2. Demonstrate awareness of personal values and biases and cultural worldview.
3. Conceptualise cases within a theoretical framework.
4. Understand and apply technical and conceptual skills related to basic counselling theories, principles and issues.
5. Assess risk in the counselling relationship and manage mandatory reporting.
6. Integrate all aspects of counselling including assessment, goal setting, objectives, establishment of the therapeutic relationship, progression of the session and effective termination.
7. Demonstrate a continuous commitment to personal development and growth.

Course Content

This course focuses on the counselling relationship and the counselling process. In addition, students are expected to develop expertise in case conceptualisation and advanced counselling skills. Teaching methods and techniques to be used in the course are as follows: Lecture, Case Study, Group Work, Reading, Discussion

1) To be able to set appropriate goals for the client within the framework of psychological counseling theories, to demonstrate effective counseling skills that will help clients to achieve their goals and increase their capacity to cope with life situations. 5

5) Counselors know and use appropriate assessment and evaluation methods in order to support the development of their clients, to reveal their potential and to provide need-oriented services; can distinguish between basic types of assessment and evaluation and know the basic concepts of standardized and non-standardized measurement 2

8) The psychological counselor keeps records of his/her practices, introduces referral institutions to the staff of the institution where he/she works, the individual receiving psychological counseling services and their guardians, and assists stakeholders in receiving support from these institutions. 5
