Course Objectives: The main objective of this course is to examine typography from the smallest element to the complete typographic design, as well as displaying and demonstrating the difference of attributes of type, how it sounds, how it looks and how it communicates, in various media.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Define the concepts of “Type” , “Typography”, “Typeface” and “Font”
2) Define the parts of letters.
3) Define the culture of typography.
4) Identify the type classes.
5) Recognize the fundamentals of typography
6) Display the usage of grid.
7) Display the fundamentals of typesetting.
8) Analyze the resonance that typefaces choice creates.
9) Analyze typographic communication
10) Execute content-aware typographic designs.
11) Recognize the usage of typography in print, time-based and interactive media.
12) Reproduce skills for digital typesetting.
13) Make typographic design with communicative and aesthetic concerns.

Course Content

The course is structured in three parts. First part aims students to recognize the theory of typography from terminology to applicable rules and definitions. Second part will concentrate on application of the information as practicing with class works. For each week a classwork related with that week’s topic is assigned to students. The third part is the design application of projects where the students will construct visual work based on the information and practice and combine them.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

1) Introduction to the Course and Syllabus Review; Introduction to basic terminology:
What is type? Definition of Typography, type and typeface. Font, Font Familes. None.
2) Lecture 01: Anatomy of Type, Close-up
Parts of Characters, How do the typefaces form? How does a single letterform can vary? Classwork 01: Type Bunnies (Remember the rabbit from 6 and 2? Explore the visual features of the letters) Introducing Project 01: Typographic Portrait None.
3) L02: History of Type: A brief history of typography as well as how the written language is developed. CW02: Type Chart (Comparing the body parts of fonts from different periods) Working on the “Typographic Portrait” Project. Critiques and Group Discussion. Sketches for the project.
4) L03: Classification of Type
How can we differenciate type? Or in other words, how do we classify them, group them? Acoording to which features? CW03: Typographic Twins
(Drawing letters to study features) Project 01 due. 
Introducing Project 02: Photo Type Advanced sketches for the first project.
5) L04: Attributes of Type Size, Weight, Color, Character, Space, Layout... Design basics applied to typography. CW04: Table of Contents (Arranging a table of contents page) Working on the “Photo Type” Project. Critiques and Group Discussion. Sketches for the 2nd project
6) L05: Type as Text & The Typographic Grid
Type as Text is based on the book “Mac is not a Typewriter” by Robin Williams. How text is used in a layout. CW05: Type Hiearchy (4 different emphasis in the same text in 4 design) Working on the “Photo Type” Project. Critiques and Group Discussion. Project 01 Redo due. The students who needed a redo for the first project will do the necessary corrections and prepare the project for hand in. Advanced sketches for the 2nd project.
7) L06: Hearing Type, Part I
Characters have characteristics. Male-female, young-old, stylish-ragged... How do we hear them? CW06: Typing Sound (Visualize spesific sounds with typography) Project 02 due. Introducing Project 03: “Type Specimen” Preparation fot the 2. project hand in
8) Review on topics. None
9) L07: Hearing Type, Part II
Where’s the analogy with type? How can we say different things usign the exact same word? CW07: Who is this Type? (Finding out about the characterization of typefaces) Working on the “Type Specimen” Project. Critiques and Group Discussion. Project 02 Redo due. Sketches for the 3rd project. The students who needed a redo for the second project will do the necessary corrections and prepare the project for hand in.
10) L08: Image as Type, Type as Image. 
The substantial usage of type. CW08: Personal Mark (Creating a personal mark using your own initials) Working on the “Type Specimen” Project. Critiques and Group Discussion. Advanced sketches on the third project.
11) L09: Type as Message.
The meaning beyond the type. Context. 
How to visualize it. CW09: A Letter from .... (Letters written by someone famous. How will they look like?) Project 03 due. Inroducing Final Project: Typographic Book Finalizing the third project.
12) L10: 3D Type
The use of 3D in typography, type imitating 3-dimentionality CW10: Letter Playground (Letters to be found in the environment, capturing and tracing) Critiques & discussion on Final Project. Sketches for the final project.
13) DS.11: Mecralarda Yazı
Hareketli ortamda ve etkileşimli ortamda yazı, farklı mecralardaki tipografi kullanımı için gerekli bilgiler U.11: “Morfoz” (Harflerin bir diğerine dönüşmesi) Final Projesi üzerinde çalışma

14) L12: Type Crimes Revision of the common made mistakes in designing with typography. Working on the projects. Revision on necessary subjects. Film Screening: Helvetica (Subject to Change) Working on Final Project. Finalizing the final project.
