Course Objectives: The first aim of the course is to teach students how to identify and analyze the shape and content of documents, their production and circulation in bureaucratic structures, and their meaning in historical contexts. In this way, students will gain academic knowledge about the methods of diplomatics (documentary science) and paleography (ancient writing science).
The second objective of the course is to examine the analysis of Ottoman archival documents using digital tools in practice. In this direction, Kumu and Gephi, computer-aided network analysis tools, will be taught in the course. The third aim of the course is to examine the functioning of the Ottoman central and provincial bureaucracy through documents and to encourage students to think about the relationships between the people and institutions that make up this network.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
At the end of this course students will be able to;
1. Will be able to read and analyze 18th century and early 19th century handwritten Ottoman documents by mastering the disciplines of diplomacy and paleography.
2. Will be able to follow the bureaucratic transformation in the period of one hundred and fifty years from the 18th century to the mid-19th century through documents.
3. Will learn to use Kumu and Gephi software and will be able to analyze the network analysis of the data obtained from Ottoman documents with these tools.

Course Content

To read and analyze Ottoman documents; to be able to use Kumu and Gephi programs effectively.

The teaching methods of the course are technology assisted learning as well as classical learning methods.
