Course Objectives: To comprehend the importance of the socio-economic, administrative and cultural role of cities in the formation and change of Ottoman history, to examine the common aspects of important Ottoman cities in Anatolia, Balkans and Arab geography, the reasons for different development dynamics and the cultural heritage left by these cities to the post-Ottoman period.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
At the end of this course the student;

1. Will have knowledge about the process of Ottoman urbanization and architecture in Anatolia and the Balkans.
2. Will have a broad and sufficient knowledge about the architecture and cultural and artistic developments in Ottoman and pre-Ottoman Anatolia and the Balkans.
3. Will critically evaluate Ottoman architecture and urbanization.
4. Will be able to analyze and evaluate the acquired knowledge and critical knowledge together with the knowledge of Ottoman history acquired in other courses.

Course Content

In the course, readings and discussions will be made on the general characteristics of Ottoman cities, their differences according to geographies and periods, the legacy they took from their predecessors and left to the following periods. Topographical features, population details, architectural structures, socio-economic and administrative daily life and institutions of the cities will be analyzed by taking cities as examples.

The teaching methods of the course are classical learning methods as well as travel and observation learning methods.
