Course Objectives: 1) To gain an understanding of some of the basic issues in the philosophy and ethics of medicine.
2) Develop the critical skills necessary for understanding and evaluating arguments and claims concerning the nature and ethics of medicine.
3) Encourage thoughtful and respectful discussions on topics related to the philosophy and ethics of medicine.
4) Communication skills in the academic and clinical setting.
5) Introduction to Behavioral Sciences

Course Content

This course analyzes basic ideas in the philosophy and ethics of medicine. First, we will look at the nature of medicine. Second, we will critically examine the concepts of health and disease and address issues such as : What is health? What is disease? How do we construct medical reality? We will also examine the nature of therapeutic interventions and the philosophical and moral implications of the clinical encounter (patient -physician relationship).
