Course Objectives: | Main objective of the course is to introduce live-action video and use of it with different contemporary purposes. Students start with cutting a trailer to practice non-linear editing and understand the ways of Hollywood. They continue with experimental film making by shooting a series of video clips in order to express a concept or an emotion through narrative and cinematography. Designing a main title sequence as a final project will help students to combine their video editing and graphic design experience into a commercial time-based project. Regarding those projects, students will experience various concepts and practices of filmic motion. |
The students who have succeeded in this course; 1) Define the concepts and methods of editing through cinema history. 2) Recognize Hollywood style editing and film language. 3) Study necessary editing and motion graphics software skills in order to realize design ideas into final products. 4) Study necessary shooting and lighting skills in order to realize story ideas into short films. 5) Recognize video as a medium of expression. 6) Execute time-based design projects based on concepts and narratives. 7) Identify the current trends of video influenced by cinema. 8) Develop personal film language by experimenting cinematography. 9) Define the culture of experimental filmmaking and motion graphics through the history of opening credits. 10) Recognize typography and live-action relation by designing main titles. 11) Manage time and process for a commercial video project. |
The course is structured in three parts. First part focuses on Hollywood trends and MTV style editing. Students choose a feature length movie to re-edit, re-mix or re-make a trailer and a teaser out of it. Besides non-linear editing, forming a narrative with filmic restrictions is also practiced through this project. Building up tension and drama is discussed and managed with the tools of editing. Second part will concentrate on experimental film making. Setting an atmosphere to express an emotion is practiced through live-action video and ways of cinematography. Students shoot short clips based on a concept or a narrative of their own. Relating music and sound with the footage plays also an important role for the project. The third part combines video and graphic through designing a main title sequence for a film or series. Taken seriously as a kind of early senior project, stages of a commercial time-based project is discussed and executed. Experimental and artistic values of main titles is also emphasized during the process. |
