Course Objectives: This course aims to equip the student with the basic knowledge on the use of a professional audio recording studio. The student will study theoretical background on microphone techniques, recording and playback signal chains as well as applications of these with industry standard digital audio workstations via projects of the course.

I. Describes basic recording and playback chains of a professional recording studio.
II. Presents mono and stereo microphone techniques and their applications
III. Introduces miking of musical instruments and ensembles via applications
IV. Introduces basic operation of an Avid Pro Tools system
V. Describes the types and specifications of commercial microphone types
VI. Describes physical features of sound waves and the interpretation of these parameters
VII. Applies multi-track recording and editing sessions

Course Content

Basic knowledge of a professional audio recording studio setup, Physical quantities of sound waves and sound propagation, Types of microphones, working principles, specifications and common applications, The recording & playback chains: Sound source, microphone, tie lines, patchbay, pre-amplifier, AD convertor and DAW, Basic operation of Avid Pro Tools System, Mono microphone techniques, close miking, accent mikinig, ambient miking, Stereo microphone techniques, Spaced vs. Coincident pairs, A-B, XY, ORTF, NOS, DIN, Stereo microphone techniques & applications: Blumlein, Mid-Side, Decca Tree, Editing techniques in Avid Pro Tools, Recording Acoustic Drums – Miking techniques and applications, Multi-track recording in Avid Pro Tools, Introduction to digital signal processing via Pro Tools inserts, Introduction to analog signal processing via outboard equipment.
