Course Objectives: Environmental impact assessment can be a complex and challenging task. This course is intended to integrate inter-related subjects such as cumulative impact assessment greenhouse emissions assessment, risk analyses, social impact assessment and international EIA into a single framework. A student completing this course will be provided with state-of-the-art tools, approaches and techniques to solve EIA problems.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1.Describe environmental impact assessment
2.Integrate inter-related subjects regarding EIA into a single framework.
3.Calculate emission values.
4.Deduce conclusions from risk assessment analyses
5.Analyze a system in terms of EIA
6.Rate components in terms of their impact on environmental and social factors
7.Propose an assessment scheme for a chosen significant change in the environment

Course Content

Pre-project environmental inventories and current situation analysis. Assessment of the environmental impacts of a project at the construction, operation, and post-project stages. Comparison of project alternatives in terms of their environmental impacts. Direct and indirect environmental impact analysis. Post project monitoring and evaluation. Strategic environmental impact assessment. The role of sustainability in planning systems and planning applications.

2) 2nd week: Cumulative Impact Assessment
3) 3rd week: Cumulative Impact Assessment Preparing homework on principles of impact assessment.
4) 4th week: Greenhouse emissions assessment
5) 5th week: Greenhouse emissions assessment
6) 6th week: Risk Assessment and accident analyses Choosing an industrial process to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions and proposed solutions.
7) 7th week: Risk Assessment and accident analyses
8) 8th week: Midterm / Social impact assessment and environmental justice Studying all the topics covered so far.
9) 9th week: Social impact assessment and environmental justice
10) 10th week: Social impact assessment and environmental justice Explaining the social dimension in impact assessment through cases.
11) 11th week: International EIA process
